Immerse yourself in bygone times and learn about local history and culture. The “Old Mill” Village Museum in Wilderswil will amaze you with its different annual exhibitions and gives you an insight into the everyday life of local people in former times. Admire the intact wooden water wheel on the exterior of the mill and listen to the thundering Saxetbach stream.
The “Old Mill” Village Museum in Wilderswil, which was opened in 1988, is, as its name suggests, housed in an old mill. The impressive house is situated right next to the gushing Saxetbach. Once upon a time, there was a grain mill, a village oven, a grinder for hemp and flax as well as a “Stampfi” (bone crusher) for bones and bark here. The wooden wheels on the outside of the house and the mill on its inside have been restored and are put to use for demonstration purposes. Visit the village museum and be amazed by the power of water. In addition to regular demonstrations, the Old Mill also hosts temporary exhibitions on historical or cultural topics from the region. Explore the world of the past and find out fascinating facts about the everyday lives of your ancestors. The permanent exhibition focuses in particular on the Middle Ages and Alpine farming in the region. There are two model castles for you to admire, along with a wonderful Alpine diorama with a carving of a cattle drive and a visualisation of an Alpine hut.
